The Consolidated PBY was designed in the early 1930s and first flew on March 28, 1935. Although considered obsolete at the start of World War II, the PBY Catalina was used extensively throughout the war by all US Armed Forces as well as the air forces and navies of Allied countries. The PBY was put to use in anti-submarine patrols, patrol bombing, convoy escorts, search and rescue missions and as a cargo transport. The PBY Catalina remained in service with the Brazilian Air Force until the early 1980s, but continues service with civilian firefighting outfits as a waterbomber in aerial firefighting operations.
This paper model builds the PBY-5 Catalina in a scheme of a 1945 era Coast Guard aircraft.
