The Consolidated PBY, was designed in the early 1930s and first flew on March 28, 1935. The Canadian built version was called the Canso. Although considered obsolete at the start of World War II, the Canso/PBY was used extensively throughout the war by all US Armed Forces as well as the air forces and navies of Allied countries. The Canso/PBY was put to use in anti-submarine patrols, patrol bombing, convoy escorts, search and rescue missions and as a cargo transport. The Canso/PBY remained in service with the Brazilian Air Force until the early 1980s, but continues service with civilian firefighting outfits as a waterbomber in aerial firefighting operations.
This paper model builds a Canadian Canso which was put into service with the California based aerial firefighting outfit, Airborne Fire Attack, tail N322FA which crashed in August 1997.
