As the Pacific war continued, a new type of bomb was nearing completion. An atomic bomb, code named “Little Boy”, was being developed by the Manhattan Project which operated from 1942 to 1946. Little Boy was a uranium based type of atomic bomb using uranium-235 as the detonation material. Little boy wighed 9,700 lbs and was120 inches long by 28 inches wide. On August 6, 1945, Little Boy became the first atomic bomb in history to be used as a weapon and was dropped on the city of Hiroshima, Japan by a Boeing B-29 Superfortress named “Enola Gay”. The force of the explosion from Little Boy on Hiroshima was estimated to be between 13 to 18 kilotons of TNT.
This paper model kit represents the Little Boy as it would have appeared in preperation on a dolly to be loaded into the aircraft.
