Hyde Octagon House

History:

Following the end of the Civil War, Corporal Ernestus Hyde returned to his hometown of Friendship, N.Y. Allegany County. He briefly resumed farming and managed a mill. In 1870 he built an octagonal house (a form which was popular in the USA at that time) on Elm Street and moved into it with his wife Julia.
Nineteenth century did not only see the popularity of octgonal house. It also saw the rise of spiritualism. Hyde family was also fascinated with fashion for spiritistic sessions. Erastus and his wife soon joined a spiritualist group.

Hyde later became a homeopathic physician.  Julia Hyde was an accomplished musician and reportedly an ordained Methodist minister. When Julia died within two days of her husband, the belief arose that their departed spirits frequented the old, oddly-shaped house.

Hyde House soon fell into ruin and in 1987, the vacant and long-neglected building was acquired Genesee Country Village Museum in Mumford, NY., which moved it to Orchard Street. There it was restored to its former glory and turned into museum.

Description:

Hyde House was built as a one-story building on an octagonal base. A roofed porch was erected around the ground floor. The ground foor housed the kitchen, sitting room, dinning room and the living room. There were four bedrooms on the first floor. The house is topped by a small, octagonal tower.
