1/33 scale Republic P47D Razorback Thunderbolt War Eagle / Snafu

The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt gained its impressive reputation in Europe during the Second World War. Dubbed the Juggernaut, was able to take as much punishment as it gave out and bring its pilot safely home.
It was considered to be the "biggest, toughest and most dependable single engine Fighter of WW2".  Thunderbolt pilots flew with confidence behind the roar of a 2,000-horsepower radial engine and the devastating firepower of eight .50 caliber machine guns. The combination of strong reliable engine and heavy armament made the P-47 a feared ground-attack aircraft.
The Thunderbolt was generally considered by Military Commanders, as one of the top three American fighters, along with the P-51 Mustang and P-38 Lightning.
More P-47s were bult than any other fighter airplane (in the US).

Originally 42-74742  Republic P-47D-6-RE Thunderbolt "War Eagle", flown by Captain Julius Maxwell...of the Duxford Eagles, 84th Fighter Squadron (78th Fighter Group USAAF) flying from Duxford England in 1944...a veteran of over 130 missions with 2 1/2 kills.
P-47D 42-74742  WZ-O, was later renamed "Snafu", WZ-D, while flown by Lt. Severino B. Calderon (another 90 missions).
In December of 1944, whilst on loan to another pilot, Lt Earl Stier, 42-74742 was damaged beyond repair in a crash landing.
Another restored P47 flies today as a recreation of 42-7472 painted in the original "War Eagle/Snafu" paint scheme, however it also displays D-Day Invasion stripes.
