Details

The Pilot: Morris Magnusson joined the Air Corps in 1943 from his native South Dakota, and flew 80 combat missions in P-47 Thunderbolts- 20 more than he was required to fly. On his 80th mission, Magnusson was downed and spent the rest of the war as a German POW. Maj Mac refers to Major McCormick, officer in charge of the 36th Fighter Groups support echelon- the mechanics, artisans, and support personnel who kept the planes flying and fighting. Having an airplane named for him (and his wife, who was nicknamed Mac) shows the respect pilots in the Group had for Major McCormick. Mr. Magnusson went on to a distinguished career as a professional educator in South Dakota, passing away in August of 2010.

The Plane: The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt started out as an air-superiority fighter, but found true fame as a powerful, rugged fighter-bomber. Designed using the lessons painfully won by other Allied aircraft types in early combat against the Germans and Japanese, the Thunderbolt was designed to have an excess of available engine power, heavy pilot armor, and a devastating eight-gun armament.

A John Mollison art print of this aircraft, autographed by pilot Magnusson, is available.

Paper Model Details: 142 parts, six diagrams, wire templates. Fuselage formers with joining strips; wing spar with airfoil formers. Rolled landing gear legs, layered wheels, opaque canopy with shadowed graphic interior, printed wheel well detail. Two bombs. Degree of Difficulty: 3/5
