The North American P-51D Mustang may be one of the most recognized and successful Fighter aircraft of all time of all time.  Serving throughout WW2 in the European and Pacific theaters, it is still flown today in various evolved configurations.  Powered by an American Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, the P-51 proved to be outstandingly fast and maneuverable, with long range extended by the use of drop tanks. The aircraft also excelled as a fighter-bomber, escorting B-17s and B-24s on raids deep into enemy territory.

The famed 332nd Fighter group, known as the Tuskegee Airmen, were America's first all "Black" Fighter squadrons.  Finally recognized sixty years after the fact for their contributions in WW2, the four Red Tail fighter squadrons have been immortalized in more than one big budget movie, and the Red Tails are now rightfully recognized as heroes of WW2.
