The North American P-51D Mustang may be one of the most recognized and successful Fighter aircraft of all time of all time.
Serving throught WW2 in the European and Pacific theaters, it is still flown today in various evolved configurations.
Powered by an American Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, the P-51 proved to be outstandingly fast and maneuverable,
with long range extended by the use of drop tanks. The aircraft also excelled as a fighter-bomber, escorting B-17s and B-24s on raids deep into enemy territory.

This kit builds "Big Beautiful Doll" P-51D 44-13923 flown by Lt. Col. John Landers.
Col. John Landers scored 6 victories in the Pacific Theater while flying P-40s with the 49th FG. He also flew with several 8th AF units in the European Theater flying P-38s and P-51s, all of which were named Big Beautiful Doll. Col. Landers scored 4 victories while flying with the 38th FS, 55th FG and was promoted to command the 357th FG during 1944. He transferred to Duxford in 1945, where he commanded the 78th FG. Col. Landers scored 8.5 victories in the 8th AF for a total of 14.5 victories. (4.5 victories were in the P-51)
