The North American P-51 Mustang is one of the classic aircraft of all time. This paper model builds an early mark of P-51 flown in Europe during World War II by a U.S. Army Air Ace!

Powered by an American Packard-built Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, the P-51 proved to be outstandingly fast and maneuverable, with long range extended by the use of drop tanks. The aircraft also excelled as a fighter-bomber. Escorting B-17s and B-24s on raids deep into the German heartland, the P-51 proved it could best everything the Luftwaffe threw against it, even scoring victories against the speedy new Me-262 jet. It was equally effective in the Pacific, was one of the most feared Allied fighters where ever it was encountered, and was flown operationally by pilots from at least eight Allied countries. Post war, it served into the 1960s with some 55 air forces worldwide.

This paper model depicts the Hun Hunter from Texas, a P-51 flown by 1st Lt. (later Captain) Henry Brown, the top scorer of the 355th Fighter Group. Lt. Brown scored 14.2 aerial victories and accounted for 14.5 aircraft destroyed on the ground during his combat tour in Europe. Downed by ground fire while shooting up a Luftwaffe airfield on October 3, 1944, Captain Brown finished out the rest of WW2 as an unwilling guest of the Third Reich. Captain Brown continued on in Air Force service post-war, serving in a number of billets, including a combat flying tour in Vietnam retiring as a Colonel in 1974.
