The deHavilland 50 series was developed out of the DH9/9a bomber families. The airframe was enlarged to contain an enclosed cabin for up to four passengers, placed ahead of the pilot. Wheeled or pontoon undercarriages could be fitted, and the airframe could accept a variety of liquid-cooled inline or air-cooled radial engines. deHavilland built very few actual DH50s; the bulk of those used around the world were produced under local licenses.

16 DH50 -A and -J models were produced under license in Australia, where the aircraft’s robustness and load-carrying capacity made it popular. The -J model was powered by a 385-hp Jaguar air-cooled radial engine.

Lad-N-Dad’s model depicts a DH50j operated by Qantas. Wearing the civil registration VH-ULG and named “Hippomenes”, the paper model builds this aircraft in landplane configuration, and features an optional furnished passenger compartment. A separate Lad-N-Dad paper model is available of a DH50a  floatplane of the RAAF.

Paper Model Details  96 parts with two pages of construction diagrams; tip sheets. Cockpit insert with seat and instrument panel. Individual cylinders on 3d engine. Fuselage uses bulkheads and butt-strap joining strips; wings use airfoil-shaped bulkheads for contour. Wire templates, box-disk wheels, and layered prop. Degree of difficulty: 3/5.
